Friday, March 3rd at Valentina's Studio, Morro Bay

There is so much more to Tango than just dancing! Kick off the evening with a free discussion group (chamuyo) with Makela Brizuela. Get her perspective on the music, dance, and culture of Tango. Bring your questions and enjoy the evening with this personable and dynamic instructor. Come on, join in the fun.

Saturday, March 4th at Motions, Atascadero

12:00 – 1:30 pm Crosses (beg/int)

The technique of the ocho and its relation to the front and back crosses.

1:30 – 3:00 pm Turns (int)

Build up of the enrosque for the leaders. Counterbody and groundedness to generate the turn. Giro for the followers - exercises and techniques for the smoothness of the turn.

3:30 – 5:00 pm Milonga (int)

Rhythm and musicality for the fun and up-beat Milonga.

Sunday, March 5th at Motions, Atascadero

12:00 – 1:30 pm The Embrace (beg/int)

Technique and exercises for a smooth transition from close to open embrace and viceversa.

1:30 – 3:00 pm Musicality (int)

Dancing to the beat, the melody, and the lyrics. Beginning, middle, and end of longer and shorter phrases.

3:30 – 5:00 pm Barridas (int/adv)

Technique and exercises to include barridas (sweeps) in social dancing.

Weekend Classes at Motions Academy of Dance, Atascadero:

4040 El Camino Real, Atascadero: From Hwy 101 (north or south), exit on San Anselmo Rd. Take San Anselmo northeast, turn left on El Camino Real. It's on the left in the K-Mart Shopping Center.

Cost for 90-Minute Group Classes: $30 per person per class. Register for multiple classes at once and save: 2 for $55, 3 for $75, 4 for $95, 5 for $110, or all 6 for $125. Pre-register online. Pre-registration really helps to cut down the chaos before class and is greatly appreciated. Also, refunds at the end of the weekend are much less work than dealing with multiple payments.

The last 15 minutes of each 90-minute class will be for practice and/or warm-up for next class. Please try to arrive early so you don’t miss anything.

Private instruction is available for $125 per 50 minute class, discounted to $100 for singles or couples who have registered for at least one group class. Please contact Rich to schedule private classes.




Makela Brizuela, the founder and director of Makela Tango School (since 2000), born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, graduated from the National School of Ballet of Argentina, is now one of the most respected performers, teachers and choreographers in the Los Angeles tango community. 

As a choreographer, she directed the critically acclaimed “Urban Tango” in Los Angeles (2006/7). She also choreographed "Camila, the Musical" for SMC,  "Dance in Fight" at Pepperdine University, "Tango Cabaret" at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, and "Sueño Azul" at the Electric Lodge 2103. Makela's performance credits include "Tango Nuevo Cabaret" at the Ford Amphitheater and "Cabaret Tango" at the Downey Theater. She also performed at the Redcat, the Alex Theater, and The Ricardo Montalban Theater. She appeared many times on TV (for instance on Univision) and she was featured in many films. Most recently she was part of the UNICEF video “La Bala” directed by Simon Brand and renowned choreographer Michael Schwandt. She has also been selected as one the judges in past and the upcoming San Francisco competition branch of the  Official World Argentine Tango Championship in Buenos Aires.
