Christy and Darren will discuss the music, culture, history, and future of Tango, and maybe even some stories from their trips to Buenos Aries. Bring your questions and enjoy this informative chat.

Proceed 10 miles Northwest to Los Osos and turn Right on 10th St., continue 2 blocks to Central Coast Dance on the corner of Santa Ynez Ave., above Los Osos Liquor. 10:30 – 11:30 am Introduction (First Timers)
Join us for your first Tango Embrace. Darren & Christy will introduce basic tango concepts for those who have little or no tango experience. After this class, you'll be ready to stay for the "All Levels" classes. No experience or partner required. Beginning level dancers are also encouraged to benifit from this class. Attending this $20 class includes admission to this evening’s class / concert / performance / milonga at Cal Poly!
11:30 – 1:00 pm Follower's Technique (All Levels)
Basics to Boleos, all levels welcome... including leaders!. Christy will share with you her tips for the perfect walk, cruzada, forward ocho, back ocho, molinete and boleo in both Salon and Close Embrace styles of Argentine Tango. Across the floor and partner exercises are used to practice specific techniques for each of these fundamental elements. Leaders are encouraged to attend this workshop…as all experienced leaders will tell you…the key to being a good leader is knowing what you are leading!
2:00 – 3:30 pm Art of Improvisation (All Levels)
For all levels of dancers with some Argentine Tango experience. Learn the secrets of fluid and artistic improvisation and take your dancing to a higher level with an improvised, interesting, and musical approach.
3:30 – 5:00 pm Milonga (Beginning and Intermediate Levels)
Learn it today, dance it tonight! Use Tango technique in this fun and upbeat predecessor to the Tango. Intended for those who have completed, at a minimum, the Level 1 series at least once.
Chumash Auditorium, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo
From Hwy 101 South, exit on Monterey, turn right and imediatly left onto Loomis St, then turn right on Grand Ave. From Hwy 101 North, exit on Grand Ave. and turn left. Follow Grand Ave. on to campus. Chumash Auditorium is upstairs in the University Union at the end of Grand Ave.
Permits are not required for general parking on Saturdays, and this event at Chumash Auditorium is not associated with the concert at the Performing Arts Center; therefore, if you do not park in the lots adjacent to the PAC (although they are the most convenient), you do not have to pay their event parking fee. 7:00 – 8:00 pm Tango Lesson (All Levels Welcome)
Whether you have been dancing tango for years or have never danced before, professional dance instructors from San Francisco and San Diego, Christy Coté and Darren Lees, will have you on your feet and enjoying the partnership and music that is Tango. No experience or partner required. This class is included in your admission to the Concert & Dance
8:00 – Midnight Concert / Dance / Performances
Even if you don’t dance at all, enjoy the music of this premier Bay Area Tango Band and experience the passion of our SLO Tango Community celebrating the release of Tango No. 9’s third album, Here Live No Fish. Samples of their music are available on their web site. For your enjoyment, there will also be dance performances and other dance music during the band’s breaks.
Admission at the door is $16, or purchase in advance at the Cal Poly Dance Sport web site for $12 general, $10 with valid student ID, www.cpdst.org.

11:30 – 1:00 pm Musicality & Giros (Beginning and Intermediate Levels)
Dance effortlessly to different orchestras & with various styles. Understanding the music is the key to having an outstanding dance experience regardless of your skill level. Work on turning technique and music interpretation. Intended for all who have previously completed the Level 1 series.
1:00 – 2:30 pm Colgadas (Intermediate and Advanced Levels)
Create opportunities for various, challenging yet fun colgadas (shared axis turns). Partner required (see note below).
3:30 – 5:00 pm Advanced Improvisation (Advanced)
Create high level improvisational steps by combining enganches, colgadas, and sacadas. Experience with these elements and partner required.
Note for Workshop Classes at Central Coast Dance
The last 15 minutes of each 90-minute class will be for practice and/or warm-up for next class. Please try to arrive early so you don’t miss anything. The five Introductory, Beginning-Intermediate, and All Levels group classes do not require partnered dancers and frequent rotation will be encouraged. The two Intermediate-Advanced group classes strongly recommend partnered dancers and rotation is not expected. Laura is happy to do what she can to facilitate dancers finding partners for the intermediate-advanced classes. Private instruction is available, please contact Laura to schedule. If you need studio space for your private, Laura can also help with that.
Cost for 90-Minute Group Classes:
$30 per person per class. Register for multiple classes at once and save: 2 for $55, 3 for $75, 4 for $95, 5 for $110, or all get all 6 for $120.Individual Private Instruction is $80 per hour per instructor, maximum of one couple per instructor. Semi-private classes are $60 per couple per hour, led by both instructors with a minimum of three couples. Please contact Laura to schedule private and semi-private classes.

7:00 – 9:00 pm Review and Guided Practica (All Levels)
Christy is staying with us Monday to lead an All Levels review & guided practica, $10. This will include a review of all the weekend’s classes to help those who attended those classes solidify the material and ask any questions that may have arisen. This takes the time and place of our regularly scheduled Monday night class and practica at the SLO Vets' Hall.
9:00 – 10:00 pm Open Practica (All Levels)
Even if you cannot join us for the review, please do join us for open practice and dancing, $5.
As the creator and director of the Argentine Tango program at San Francisco's popular Metronome Dance Center, she oversees and teaches a full schedule of group and private classes, workshops, practicas and Milongas. Christy's teaching method has been published in the Argentine Tango Manual by Dance Vision and is complimented by a series of 20 instructional DVDs by Christy & George Garcia of Honolulu.
Christy is also a founding member of the all female tango company, Tango Con*Fusión. You can catch Christy and the other dancers of Tango Con*Fusión in Leading Ladies of Tango December 13-16, 2006 at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco.
Darren Lees lives in San Diego and has been dancing Argentine tango for 5 years and for the past 2 years he and Christy have enjoyed traveling together, teaching at various tango communities including San Francisco to Boston and at festivals such as Reno´s Tango Brujo, TangoFest Maui, and on the Tango at Sea Cruise.
Christy and Darren perform regularly with MonTango, Tango No. 9 and produce monthly Tango shows at San Francisco's Peña Pacha Mama restaurant. They also choreograph for and perform with their professional performance group, The LiberTango Dancers who were selected from over 150 auditioning groups to perform in the 2006 San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival.
Christy & Darren look forward to returning to San Luis Obispo once again to share their love of this wonderful dance!
