There is so much more to Tango than just dancing! Kick off the evening with a free discussion group (chamuyo). Christy will discuss the music, dance and culture of Tango. Bring your questions and enjoy this informative chat.
Continue the evening with great food, drink, music, and most of all dancing. They will do a demo or two for your enjoyment. No cover for this social dancing event at the Higher Groundz Family Coffee House, 3230 Broad St., Suite 130, San Luis Obispo (Broad and Orcutt).
Saturday, January 22nd at World Rhythm & Motion
3:00 – 4:30 pm Follower's Technique 1
Basics to Boleos - For all levels. Learn techniques of matching leg lines, heels close to the floor, Contra Body Movement, and all the little things that will make you the dancer that everyone wants to dance with. Perfect for leaders as well as followers since an understanding of the follower is key to a good lead!
4:30 – 5:30 pm Musicality (a free class!)
Exploring the music of Argentine Tango - For all levels since this is about knowledge not skills. Christy knows that understanding the music is so important to our dancing that she wants everyone to participate, so she is throwing this one in for free. How great is that!
5:30 – 7:00 pm Improvisation
Unlocking the Secrets of Improvisation - For all levels. Now if we told you in advance what it's about, it wouldn't be improvised would it?
World Rhythm & Motion Studio: 150 South St., San Luis Obispo. From Hwy 101 (north or south), exit on Madonna Rd. and turn right on Madonna. Turn left on Higuera St., then right on South St., and left on Parker. The studio is on the corner of South & Parker Streets, part of the Greyhound bus station building. Please park on Parker St.

4:30 – 6:00 pm Follower's Technique 2
Boleos and Beyond (aka Beyond the Basics) includes barridas, carpa, volcada, sacadas, etc. Again, this is not just for followers since the leaders must know what they are asking their partners to do before they can learn to lead it.
6:00 – 7:30 pm Milonguero Style
Intermediate level technique for Leaders and Followers in the intimate Milonguero (Close Embrace) Style Tango where two really do dance as one. Learn how to use this style with different rhythms of D'Arienzo and to Vals to Pugliese.
San Luis Obispo Oddfellow's Hall: 520 Dana St., San Luis Obispo. From Hwy 101 (north or south), exit on Marsh St. From Marsh, turn left on Nipomo St., and Dana St. is the first left after Higuera.
Cost:
$20 per person per class. Register for multiple classes and save: 3 for $55 or all 4 for $70. Students save an additional $5 with ID. One hour private classes also available for $80 per couple, contact Rich to schedule.The last 15 minutes of each class will be for practice and/or warm-up for next class. Please try to arrive early so you don’t miss anything.
Christy Coté
-- dancing, choreographing and teaching professionally for more than 25 years -- began her career as a Ballroom and Latin dance instructor for Arthur Murray Dance Studios. For the past 9 years, she has devoted her love of dance to Argentine Tango becoming one of San Francisco's most respected dancers and teachers. She has been featured locally on KVTU's Segment 2 Report with Bob MacKenzie, KPIX/Channel 5 Evening Magazine and nationally in Dance Spirit Magazine.As the Creator and Director of the Academia de Tango Argentino at San Francisco's popular Metronome Ballroom she oversees and teaches a full schedule of group and private classes, workshops, practicas and Milongas. Christy's teaching method has been published in the Argentine Tango Manual by Dance Vision and is complimented by a series of 15 instructional DVDs/VHS tapes by Christy & George Garcia of Honolulu. Christy also co-hosts the popular Mariposa Argentine Tango Club Milonga. This is San Francisco's longest running Milonga, now in its 8th year.
Christy performs regularly with MonTango, Trio Garufa and other Tango musicians and produces monthly Tango shows at San Francisco's Peña Pacha Mama restaurant. Christy has performed with various partners including Pampa Cortes (of Forever Tango fame), Daniel Lapadula (Buenos Aires), Marcos Questas (Las Vegas), Angel Garcia (New York City) and George Garcia (Honolulu) as well as with her performance group, The LiberTango Dancers.
Christy has shared her love of this dance teaching and performing Argentine Tango from San Francisco, to Las Vegas and as far away as Istanbul, Turkey and is looking forward to returning to San Luis Obispo on her Tango journey!
